Accused racers head to trial

Two men charged in the street racing incident last June that killed Innisfil truck driver David Virgoe are taking their case to trial next month.

Prabhjit Multani, 20, of Etobicoke appeared briefly in a Barrie court Wednesday to set a date for his preliminary hearing, scheduled to begin June 23.

Multani's hearing will be held in conjunction with co-accused Ravi Badwhar, 21, of Mississauga.

Last month, a third accused, Nauman Nusrat, 20, of Etobicoke, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence by way of street racing causing death, driving without insurance and having forged insurance documents.

Nusrat will be sentenced May 15.

Witnesses praised Virgoe, 48, for avoiding other vehicles after he was cut off on Hwy. 400 and steered into an embankment instead. Virgoe was killed instantly.
