Gardening enthusiasts in East York have the opportunity to experience a variety of gardens in their community as part of the East York Garden Club's 2008 garden tour.

The Wild and Wonderful Gardens of East York tour takes place Saturday, Sept. 6 from noon to 5 p.m.

Included in the 10 garden tour are perennial gardens, ravine gardens, and shade to full sun gardens. As well, participants can see ponds, native perennials, annuals and some unusual whimsical items.

"Some are members who offer up their gardens and some are gardens our members have seen in the past," said Veronica Callinan, president of the East York Garden Club.

One of the gardens is the Stan Wadlow Rockery, a community project sponsored by the club.

"It's a demonstration of what people can grow in their own yard," Callinan said, adding they planted hearty plants suitable for the conditions in this zone.

There will be volunteers on site to answers questions about the garden, as well home owners and volunteers will be at each of the other nine locations to provide information on the gardens.

The club usually holds the public garden tour every other year, while a private members only tour takes place in the other years.

Participants can visit the gardens in which ever order they wish once they have the map.

"You can start anywhere and go anywhere," Callinan said.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at three local retailers: Bill's Garden Centre (903 Pape Ave.), Peter's Paint and Paper (1062 Coxwell Ave.) and Grassroots (372 Danforth Ave.).

Callinan said this year has been a good one for most gardens because of all the rain the area has received. She invites everyone to come out and see the shrubs that are growing like crazy and the beautiful perennials and other plants.

"Come and see the beauty and the possibilities for your own garden," she said.
